Why Print Disability?

Vision Loss in Canada

About half a million Canadians are estimated to have significant vision loss, according to the CNIB. In Ontario alone, there are 187,000 people with vision loss or partial sight.

The prevalance of vision loss in Canada is expected to increase nearly 30 percent in the next decade.

The Aging Population

The population of Canadians 65 years and older is expected to double in the next 25 years.

People over the age of 60 with vision loss are three times more likely than those with good vision to experience clinical depression.

People with vision loss are at greater risk of social isolation and reduced community participation.

What is Print Disability?

While vision loss is a significant impairent to reading standard print, there are other forms of "print disabilities."

Learning Disability

An impairment relating to comprehension such as dyslexia.

Physical Disability

Difficulty holding or manipulating a book or inability to hold a book for long periods of time.
