Meet Kathy, a TBL editor

After more than 25 years working for an area municipality in the field of human resources, I decided it was time to retire. I decided it was time to start giving back to the community in which I have lived my whole life.

I got involved with Talking Book Library in 2015 after seeing an ad in the local newspaper. My family has an extensive history with TBL. My sister Rhonda started working for cbm (then Christian Blind Mission) in 1995, which at the time ran TBL.

My parents started volunteering not long after until cbm decided to end their work through TBL. They were very active as volunteers in the community, but TBL always held a special place in their hearts.

As an editor, I get to listen to some wonderful narrators bring books to life when they add personality to the characters in Christian novels.

Editing can be challenging. I listen for background noise, mispronunciation of words, extended pauses, page turning, and variations in volume, among other things. Then, I remove anything that may distort or detract from the recording.

I get the opportunity to read books that I wouldn’t normally pick off the library shelf. One such book was The Truth War by John MacArthur. It is a must read for anyone concerned about the preservation of truth in a post-modern society. It made me question whether the religious instruction I received had been taught “truthfully.” How do I know that what I’m learning is correct? I still struggle with this and continually ask the Lord to help me understand.

God has truly blessed me with this volunteer opportunity. I get to continue my goal to help others, but more importantly, I get to meet, work, and learn, with terrific Christians in this important ministry.
